SPAM® Hot Browns

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese
  • 1 12-ounce can SPAM® Classic, cut into 6 slices
  • 6 slices dense white bread or oatmeal bread, toasted
  • 6 large tomato slices
  • 12 slices cooked HORMEL® BLACK LABEL® Bacon or HORMEL® Fully Cooked Bacon
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish


  • 1.For the sauce: In a large saucepan, melt butter. Add flour and heat and stir over medium heat until lightly browned and bubbly, about 2 minutes. Add milk or cream, hot pepper sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Heat and stir over medium heat until sauce is thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the cheese until melted. Keep warm and set aside.
  • 2.For the Hot Browns: Preheat oven to 350°F. In large skillet, heat SPAM® Classic until lightly browned on both sides. In an ovenproof baking dish, arrange toasted bread slices. Top with SPAM® Classic and tomato slices. Sprinkle black pepper over the tomatoes. Spoon prepared cheese sauce over each. Place in oven and heat for about 5 minutes or until lightly browned. Top each with two slices of bacon and top with fresh chopped parsley. Serves 6.
