SPAM® Katsudon

Crispy panko-breaded slices of SPAM® classic, eggs and veggies go into the pan and you’ve got classic Japanese flavor.

    Katsudon Sauce

  • 1½ tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons cooking sherry or soju
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Oil for deep frying

  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs, divided
  • 1 (12-ounce) can SPAM® Classic, cut into 4 slices
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1/4 cup sliced onion
  • 1/4 cup sliced leeks
  • 4 cups cooked Japanese rice

    Katsudon Sauce

  1. In small microwaveable bowl, combine sauce ingredients. Microwave on HIGH (100%) 30 to 40 seconds or until heated and sugar is dissolved.

  3. In medium saucepan over medium-high heat, heat oil to 360°F. Place flour, breadcrumbs and 1 egg in separate shallow bowls. Lightly beat egg. Dredge SPAM® with Cheese slices with flour. Dip in egg and coat with breadcrumbs.
  4. Fry in oil until golden brown. Slice and set aside.

  6. In medium skillet over medium heat, heat oil; cook onion and leeks 2 to 3 minutes or until tender. Top with sliced SPAM® katsu.
  7. Beat remaining egg. Pour over sliced SPAM® katsu. Pour Katsudon Sauce over sliced SPAM® katsu. Cover; simmer 30 to 45 seconds or until egg is cooked through.
  8. Serve on rice.
