SPAM® Shrimp & Grits

Usually tough guys have true grit and shrimps are weak. But we’ve defied the odds by creating a shrimp with true grit! The shrimp is paired with SPAM® Classic and garlic cloves while the grit is mixed with shredded cheddar cheese. Go show ‘em who’s boss shrimp!

  • For Grits:
  • 3 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup quick cooking grits
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • For SPAM® & Shrimp:
  • 1 (12-ounce) can SPAM® Classic, diced
  • 1/2 large red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 small onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled, deveined and tails removed
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • fresh parsley leaves, chopped, for garnish


  • 1.In large saucepan, bring broth, water and salt to a boil.
  • 2.Add grits. Cook, stirring occasionally for 5-7 minutes or until done. Stir in Cheddar cheese and butter. 
  • 3.In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoon of butter. Add SPAM® Classic, peppers, onions and garlic over cook over medium heat until lightly browned.
  • 4.Sprinkle SPAM® mixture with flour. Stir and cook for about 1 minute.
  • 5.Add milk and cook until mixture is thickened. Add shrimp and cook until shrimp are no longer pink and thoroughly cooked.
  • 6.Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve over warm grits. Garnish with chopped parsley.
