Kalbi Style SPAM® Musubi

  • 4.5 oz White steamed rice, cooked ahead of time
  • 4 sheets Japanese Nori, cut in half
  • 1 oz Olive oil
  • 1/2 cup Brown cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup Yamasa soy
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 Tbsp mirin
  • ½ cup onion, fine grated
  • ½ cup Asian pear, cleaned and finely grated
  • 4 Tbsp garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil, dark
  • 1 Tbsp White sesame seeds
  • ½ oz Spicy pickled cabbage (kim chee) per musubi, squeezed dry and chopped. OPTIONAL.


  • 1.Rub brown sugar on both sides of the SPAM® Lite and let sit at room temperature for 10 minutes, while making the marinade. For marinade, mix everything EXCEPT rice and Nori and pour marinade over SPAM® Lite, soaking evenly overnight.
  • 2.Next day, remove from marinade and cook SPAM® Lite in sauté pan with light oil for 2-3 minutes on both sides or until SPAM® Lite becomes a light, sticky consistency.
  • 3.Place on rice and wrap with Nori. Option to top with spicy picked cabbage (kim chee). Slice green onions to garnish. Serve warm.
