East Meets West SPAM Rolls

Ingredients

  • 1 package egg roll wrappers
  • 1/4 cup Thousand Island salad dressing
  • 2 cups sauerkraut, drained, pressed
  • 2 cups Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 5 cups peanut oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 (12-ounce) can SPAM® Less Sodium, diced

Directions

  1. Place water in small dipping bowl or cup.
  2. Place heaping teaspoon dressing in center of egg roll wrapper, leaving about 1 inch on each side.
  3. Sprinkle 1 tablespoons SPAM® over dressing. Spread 1 tablespoon sauerkraut on top of SPAM®. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon cheese.
  4. Dip your fingertip in water; spread water evenly along edges to help seal. Fold left side over about 1/2 inch to overlap. Repeat with right side. Bring bottom up over filling; roll up to form egg roll. Run your finger across seam to seal. Turn over with seam-side down; press firmly on left and right sides making sure roll is well sealed.
  5. Heat oil to 375ºF. in deep, heavy skillet. Fry about 4 egg rolls at a time, turning each about every minute, 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown on all sides. Transfer to wire rack placed on top of sheet pan; drain.
  6. Serve SPAM® rolls warm with spicy brown or sweet hot mustard, if desired.

  1. Makes 14 to 16 SPAM Rolls.
